Pioneer of theatrical lighting techniques, Fuller stitched invention into the fabric of her modern choreography and costuming during the late 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Literally\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/dance.washington.edu\/people\/loie-fuller\">from salts to color gel<\/a>, Fuller invented a variety of chemical compounds to light up her dramatic dresses!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These experiments with light and fabric would go on to earn her various patents, special honors in The Louvre, and even membership to the French Astronomical Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In pushing the boundaries of traditional art forms, Fuller left behind a legacy of inspirational, unfettered creative expression\u2014powered by innovative technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Edith Clarke: The First Electrical Engineer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"643\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artechouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/58-1024x643.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artechouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/58-1024x643.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.artechouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/58-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/www.artechouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/58-768x482.png 768w, https:\/\/www.artechouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/58-1536x965.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.artechouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/58.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>Pictured: Edith Clarke \u2013 Image Credit:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edith_Clarke#\/media\/File:Edith_Clarke.jpg\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Powered by passion for all things STEM, Edith Clarke revolutionized an industry where the opportunities for women were extremely limited\u2013\u2013even after becoming <a href=\"https:\/\/alum.mit.edu\/slice\/first-female-engineer-inducted-inventors-hall-fame\">the first woman to earn a Master\u2019s degree<\/a> in electrical engineering at MIT in 1919.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon her monumental graduation, Clarke accepted a position at General Electric despite being overqualified. Yet in her spare time, she would invent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clarke received the <a href=\"https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US1552113A\/en\">patent for the graphical calculator<\/a> in 1925, a device that solved electric power transmission problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cThere is no demand for women engineers, as such, as there are for women doctors; but there&#8217;s always a demand for anyone who can do a good piece of work\u201d<\/em><\/p><cite>Edith Clarke,<em> <\/em>First woman electrical engineer<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet her series of firsts does not end there. Through access, exposure, and empowerment, Black Girls Code is currently shaping the innovators of tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;<em>Women and girls are naturally agents of change.
